The Cleanse, Day 3

The cleanse has been rough so far.

I think my body is going through withdrawal from meat, processed carbohydrates, high fructose corn syrup, and sugar. I've frequently felt faint and have had headaches throughout these three days. Definitely symptoms of withdrawal. It's kind of scary how I (and perhaps many Americans in general) have become addicted to processed foods.

Food addiction is real.

The worst part though is that these types of food are everywhere - hot dogs, pretzels, gyros, pizza, ice cream - all that good stuff. The smell is almost intoxicating. The only thing that held me back from wolfing down some nachos was the $59 I paid for the cleanse! Sad, I know.

Anyway, since tía Kim and ST are not on a cleanse, I just watch sadly as they eat whatever they want. Tonight, tía Kim made a rosemary pizza dough and they each decked out their pizzas with cheese, yellow peppers, mushrooms, chorizo and onions. YUM.

Your tía is an amazing baker - cakes, pies, pizzas - if it's baked, she can make it! For her rosemary pizza dough recipe, you'll need:

  1. 3 cups of regular white flour

  2. 1 teaspoon salt (she uses sea salt)

  3. 1 package active dry yeast

  4. 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  5. 1 tablespoon of white sugar

  6. 1 cup of warm water

  7. rosemary or any other herb you like - you can eyeball this to taste

Pre-heat the oven to 375 F. Combine dry ingredients. Add the water and oil. Knead the dough until everything is combined well. At this point you can add any herbs you like. ST and tía Kim added rosemary and basil. Knead to combine. Spread the dough out thinly on a cookie sheet covered in foil. You can rub some oil on the foil so it doesn't stick. Add your toppings and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is nice and brown.

Side note: Don't be greedy and overload your pizza with toppings - it will get soggy. Add toppings moderately and it shall be crispy and delicioso.

This recipe makes enough dough for two large personal pizzas.

I'm not miserable - I just miss my favorite foods, pizza being chief among them. We'll definitely make pizzas all the time together - it's so fun!
